CREATE YOUR OWN WEBPAGE!

Did you know that Alliance Internet has reserved space for you to have your own web page? That's right, if you selected the Elite Access Package, you have 500K. If you have Unlimited Access, then you have 1Mb of space. All you have to do is call our office at 611 to activate the service and you're on your way to making yourself a web page.

You don't need to be a computer programmer to make your own page either. In fact, if you can run a word processor, you can build your own web page. All you need is an HTML editor, a basic paint program and an FTP program...all of which you can find right here at Alliance Internet. There are many commercial HTML editors available, some are free and others range from $50-$500. Here is a list of some that you can try out for free for a limited time:

*Also Netscape Communicator available from www.netscape.com has a built-in HTML editor called Composer.

You can build your web page "off-line" on your own computer, then when you have it the way you want it, go ahead and transfer it to the server for the whole world to see!

Next you will need image editing software to create your graphics. Of course Adobe Photoshop is the best one to use if you have an extra $600 laying around. If not, the MS-Paint program that ships with most Windows 95 computers will work well, too. For Mac users, most newer Mac system ship with Adobe PhotoDeluxe. If you need reasonably priced software with a few more features here are a few programs you should consider.

When making graphics there are a couple of things to keep in mind:

  1. The only image file types usable on the web are .jpg (JPEG) and .gif. Almost all paint programs will allow you to save files as one of these file types. *Tip: If it's a photo, it should be .jpg, if it's a graphic you made in the computer it should be a .gif.* When saving these files make sure that there are no spaces in the file name and that the extension is attached. CORRECT: my_image.jpg INCORRECT: my image JPEG.

  2. The larger the image, the longer it will take to load. Rule of thumb: 1 second of download time per 1K of file size.

Once you have all pages laid out and graphics created, you are ready to transfer your page(s) to the server where the whole world can see them! For information about FTP programs and specific instructions about transferring, follow the link below that pertains to you:
