Picture this: after a long day of work, you settle down in front of the computer to check your Facebook profile.  You log in and soon discover that you have a frantic message from your Uncle George.  The last you knew, Uncle George was at home in Le Mars, Iowa, but according to this message he has taken an impromptu trip to London, England, where he was mugged at knife-point and left penniless.  Now, he is asking you to wire him $2,000 via Western Union as soon as possible, so that he may pay his hotel bill and get back home.

Just a quick note to alert our customers that we have had several reports from people using Outlook 2007 who are experiencing email problems.  Specifically, people are getting connection errors while trying to send or receive emails.  This issue seems to be related to the most recent round of Windows Updates that were released by Microsoft on Tuesday night.

Alliance Communications will be upgrading its email storage server tonight at 11:00 PM.  This server is used for storing email messages for Webmail customers, as well as processing incoming email.  While we are in the process of cutting over, customers will not be able to check their email for about 1 hour (from 11PM to Midnight).

No messages that are sent to alliancecom.net customers in this time frame will be lost, but customers won't be able to connect to the server to check for new messages.   After the new server is up and running, customers will again be able to check their email.

One thing to note:  for those of you that are using Webmail exclusively, Alliance will need to move the contents of your inbox from the old server to the new server, and this process could take up to 12 hours.  If you use an email program like Outlook, Windows Mail, Mac Mail, or Thunderbird, you will not be affected, as your email is stored on your PCs.

If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us at Alliance Communications by dialing 611 from an Alliance land line, or by calling (605)594-3411.

Lately there has been an uptick in bogus emails known as Phishing Scams.  Don't fall for this trick!  These messages attempt to trick our customers into providing the sender with an email account username and password.  Once the scammer has this information, that person logs into the email account and uses it to spam more people.  If you receive such a message, disregard it as it is not legitimate.  As a policy, Alliance Communications never requests customer account information from via email.

If you would like to learn more about this phishing email scam, click here.  If you would like to learn more about the Alliance Communications Spam and Virus Filter, click here.  If you have questions about this, or about any of our services, please feel free to contact us by dialing 611 on an Alliance land line, or by calling 605.594.3411.
